How to Get Started

To Homeschool or Not to Homeschool, That is the Question

Is everyone on board? Especially your spouse?
Must be able to present a high school diploma or its equivalent.

Information Overload

Read books, talk to homeschoolers, scour the internet and Pinterest...there are many ways to find information about homeschooling. Read and absorb as much as you can! The more you know, the more informed your decision can be. Below are a some sources of from Great Endeavors. We have compiled a list of books that we personally have read and think paint a great picture of homeschooling - the good, the bad, and even the ugly! And be sure to check out our Homeschool 101 board on Pinterest. We have put together a great collection of articles, books, and blog posts about starting homeschooling.

Pray, Pray, Pray

As much information and confidence as we can offer or you can find between the pages of a book or on the screen of your computer, God knows what His plan is for your family. Above all, you need to pray and reflect on this monumental decision and ask God to guide

Register Your Homeschool

CLICK HERE to access the NCDNPE registration page and complete the online Notice of Intent to Operate a Home School form.
Once the online form is completed, you will be sent an email with the NCDNPE's fax number. You will need to fax them a copy of either your high school or college diploma before they can complete your application.
  • DO NOT send a Notice of Intent to DNPE for the present school year if the only students to be enrolled in your home school: (a) Are currently under age 7 and will not turn age 7 before this coming June 1; or (b) Are currently 18 years of age or older.
  • Please send your Notice of Intent a month in advance of your home school's initial opening date. If any of your children will turn age 7 before this coming June 1, please send your Notice of Intent at least 30 days before the child's 7th birthday. One Notice of Intent per school, please -- not per student.
  • No Notices of Intent are accepted in or for May and June. If your home school will operate only during the summer months, DO NOT send a Notice of Intent to DNPE.

Obtain Immunization Records

Call your pediatrician and request a copy of your child's immunization records.

Print Your Homeschool Discount Card

Once your application is completed and approved by NCDNPE, you will be able to print a homeschool discount card HERE.

Beth : I print two copies. One I file in my notebook and the other I laminate and keep in my wallet. You never know when you could get a teacher discount by flashing your ID card!

Maintain Attendance Records

You can use any form of record keeping for your student's attendance, but DNPE highly recommends using their student attendance record form. You can download DNPE's form HERE. While not required by law, it is suggested to 'Maintain at least five clock hours of instruction with the student(s) each school day' and 'Conduct instruction each school year for 180 days'.

Beth: I use my own form throughout the year for my attendance record, but at the end of each year, I transfer the data to DNPE's form for EACH student and tuck it in EACH students section in my notebook.

Administer an Annual Standardized Achievement Test

you must officially withdraw the child from the school in which the child is currently enrolled. Don't simply stop sending the child to school.

Subsequent Years

There is no need to file a Notice of Intent every year. However, you will want to obtain updated immunization records for each student, print out an new attendance record form and print an updated Homeschool Discount Card. In continuing your school from year to year, do not again send a Notice of Intent to DNPE unless you have previously notified DNPE that your school was terminated. IF it was previously terminated and you are now re-opening it, answer "Yes" to question 1 and then, on that same line, give the former county if it will now be in a different one. Give the current county on line 2. When selecting your school name, choose an academic name appropriate for inclusion on the student's future high school diploma which would be provided by your school. Keep in mind that DNPE will NOT be able to accommodate requests later for a change of school name in the division's files.
